More miniatures bought

I decided yesterday to visit Dueling Grounds over my lunch hour. There I bought the following:

1 blister of British LW mortar platoon
1 blister of British LW MG platoon
1 blister of British LW 6 pounder guns
1 box set of 4 British sherman and 1 VC Firefly
1 starter GaleForce9 magnetic bases set

The tank box set came with an extra Firefly gun, I wonder if I can use it anywhere? It also came with five little blocks of pewter. I'll do some more research on the forums to figure out where the hell they should go.

Paint to figs

Even though my kids were beasts last night I was able to finally put some paint on my PBI. Not much but it is a start! I painted Dwarf Flesh on the heads and arms on about ten miniatures. I will have to do another coat since I don't like the paint coverage.

My goal is the get the base coat done on all the miniatures first then go back to do the highlights and shadows. That way it looks to my eye that I'm actually getting somewhere

New work area

With the birth of my twins, I have lost access to my office. This was my sanctuary where I could code and do all my geeky stuff in peace and quiet.

Over the weekend, I bought and built a new bureau from Ikea. The best thing for me is the ability to close all the doors and everything will be hidden.

One quick side note, it was such a pain to assemble. I think it took over five hours to assemble. The instructions were very clear but the amount of parts and fasteners were astounding.

Can't access this blog

Well obviously I can access this blog but 2 guys from FOWOntario can't seem to. I wonder if the re-direct is causing problems?

Finally finished preparing my PBI

I was able to finish removing the flash and mold line from all the minis from the Rifle Company Boxed set.

There is one pose that seems to be defective. All the minis had issues lining up both halves. It was the pose where the mold line literally cuts the mini in half.

One of the weapons crew ammo loader does not have a face but his helmet is there. I may just model some bandages and leave it at that.

Tonight, I'm hoping to slap on some Gesso on the PBI and start painting next week

Bought some paint

I want to buy some more Vallejo paints but they are hard to come buy unless I buy them online. I was walking near the Eaton Centre today and decided to pay a visit to Games Workshop and bought some Kommando Khaki and some Camo Green.

Update: Made an Oops. I should have bought Catachan Green instead of Camo Green. I'll leave a tad early today and try to exchange it.

Update 2: No problems exchanging it. When I told them I was painting some WWII British infantry, I was half expecting the over-caffeinated GW staff to blow a gasket that I'm not painting up some GW stuff. The guy was quite civil which was a nice change

Status Update

Well, I've prepped and primed the vast majority of the foot sloggers.. Now its time for the weapons teams, NCO's and officers.

Before I start painting, I want to choose each team member for 1 platoon. This will help me get started on getting a 600pts list up and running.

New books

Ok, I'm a book junkie. I'll admit it but I'm not joining any 12 step programs anytime soon.

I went to the "world's biggest book store" and bought a few books somewhat related to FOW.

Osprey - Caen 1994- Montgomrey's break-out attempt
Osprey - World War II Infantry Tactics - Squad and Platoon

The first book is to help me out with fleshing out the fluff for my LW British force and the second to help me understand some basic military tactics.

Gesso part II

Short answer is that it works. It does not obstruct the details of the miniatures. Last night, I got another batch of 18 minis cleaned and glued on roofing nails waiting to be primed with the black goo. I need to do some touch ups after the first coat since when the gesso dried up and shrank there were some spots where you can see the bare metal. No big deal though

Gesso as a primer

After reading this post on WeeToySoldiers , I decided to try out this technique. I bought a 500ml of DeSerres brand of Black Acrylic Gesso at Loomis for 8.95$

From what I've read, you paint this stuff on your minis, wait 24 hours and you've got a nice base to work on. When you first paint it on, it looks quite messy but the magic is that is shrinks as it dries filling in all the cavities.

Ok, last night I was able to get 30mins of free time. So this is what I was able to get done:

* Attached around 20 minis on roofing nails. Inserted them in a piece of Styrofoam. I won't prime on the Styrofoam.
* Got a peice of scrap 2x4 around 12"inch in lenght. Drill some holes in so I can attach my minis on a stick ready to be primed.

Pics of British Infantry

What I like about this page is that he named his pics with what they represent i.e. HQ, 2iC

Code Breaking

I went to the "world's biggest book store" looking for the Osprey Campaign book on the Normandy invasion. It is a four volume series divided by the different beach fronts. Guess which book they were missing... if you guess the Juno book then 2 shilling for you!

But i did not go away empty handed, I picked up Code Breaker' Victory - How the Allied Cryptographers Won World War II by Hervie Haufler. What an awesome book describing how the use of Enigma and Purple decrypts gave the Allies the edge over the Axis.

New toy

I've had my canon powershot s110 for many years now. It has served me well over years but now it was time to change. The main drawback of that camera was the lack of control when using its macro feature.

After a glowing review from my co-worker Boris, who is a massive camera geek, I decided to purchase a new casio exim. I went with the 10MO ex-z1000. Holy crap does it do a lot of cool things and very tiny to boot!

Hopefully, my twins will go to bed at a decent hour so that I can start taking pictures of all the different FOW minis that I have. Don't get your hopes up, it is not that many right now.

Now that I've figured out what each model represents, I starting to think about which mini should be on each base.

What I'm wondering if I should place the same type mini one a base. Especially, kneeling vs standing vs walking poses.

Maybe the kneeling ones in front and the standing ones in the rear?
